Billy Harris guides Great Britain to Davis Cup victory in absence of Jack Draper

Great Britain have won the Davis Cup for the 11th time after Billy Harris beat Kazakhstan's Timofey Skatov in the deciding rubber in Glasgow.

Harris, who was making his Davis Cup debut, won 6-3 6-4 to give Great Britain an unassailable 3-1 lead in the tie.

Jack Draper was originally supposed to play the deciding rubber, but he was forced to withdraw due to an injury.

Harris stepped up in Draper's absence and produced a superb performance to seal victory for Great Britain.

The 21-year-old broke Skatov's serve in the sixth game of the first set and then held his own serve to take the set 6-3.

Harris broke Skatov's serve again in the seventh game of the second set and then served out for the match to give Great Britain a famous victory.

It is the first time that Great Britain have won the Davis Cup since 2015 and it is a major achievement for captain Leon Smith.

Harris was delighted to have played a part in Great Britain's victory.

"It's an amazing feeling," he said. "I'm so proud of the team and I'm so happy to have been able to contribute to this victory."

Smith praised Harris for his performance.

"Billy played incredibly well today," he said. "He showed great composure and maturity and he deserved to win the match."

Great Britain's victory is a major boost for tennis in the country and it will give the team confidence ahead of the Australian Open in January.
