File An Extension Of Time To File Your Taxes

How to File for an Extension of Time to File

What is an Extension?

An extension of time to file is a request to the IRS for more time to file your taxes. An extension will give you until October 16, 2023 to file your 2022 federal income tax return. Filing an extension does not give you more time to pay your taxes. You can use any of the methods below to file for an extension.

File An Extension Online

You can file for an extension online through the IRS's website. The IRS provides a free service called IRS Free File. You can use IRS Free File to prepare and file your taxes for free. You can also use TurboTax Easy Tax Extension to e-file an IRS tax extension. TurboTax Easy Tax Extension is a paid service.

File An Extension By Mail

You can file for an extension by mail by completing and mailing Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. You can download Form 4868 from the IRS's website or you can get a copy from your local post office. Once you have completed Form 4868, mail it to the IRS address listed on the form.

Consequences Of Filing Late

The IRS levies a fine if you don't file or ask for an extension by April 15. The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month that your return is late, up to a maximum of 25%. If you file your return more than 60 days late, you may also be subject to a minimum penalty of $435 or 100% of the tax due on your return, whichever is less.
