Werder Bremen: A Season of Ups and Downs

2010-2011 Season in Review

The 2010-2011 season was a rollercoaster for Werder Bremen. The club finished 13th in the Bundesliga, their lowest finish in over a decade. However, they also reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, their best performance in the competition since 2009.

Bremen's poor domestic form was largely due to a lack of consistency. They were capable of beating some of the best teams in the league, but they also dropped points against some of the worst. This inconsistency ultimately cost them a place in the top half of the table.

In the Champions League, Bremen were more impressive. They topped their group ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, Werder Bremen and FC Twente. They then knocked out Inter Milan in the last 16 before losing to Real Madrid in the semi-finals.

Key Players

Werder Bremen's key players in the 2010-2011 season were:

  • Mesut Özil: The German midfielder was Bremen's star player. He scored 10 goals and provided 20 assists in all competitions.
  • Claudio Pizarro: The Peruvian striker was Bremen's top scorer with 28 goals in all competitions.
  • Per Mertesacker: The German defender was a key part of Bremen's defence. He made 40 appearances in all competitions.

Manager

Thomas Schaaf was the manager of Werder Bremen from 1999 to 2013. He led the club to the Bundesliga title in 2004 and the DFB-Pokal in 2009.

Future Prospects

Werder Bremen are hoping to improve on their performance in the 2011-2012 season. They have made some key signings, including Aaron Hunt and Marko Arnautovic, and they will be hoping to challenge for a place in the top half of the Bundesliga.
